Aran Islands
July 3, 2011
Today we spent the day on the largest of the Aran Islands, Inismór. The peaceful beauty of the Aran Islands feels far removed from our contemporary life. Some students rented bikes to explore the island, while others joined a bus tour. We visited Dún Aonghasa, an ancient fort located on the cliff tops, believed to date back as far as 1500 BC, making it one of the oldest archaeological remains in Ireland. We were amazed by the awesome views of the steep cliffs and the crashing water below. What a wonderful preview to the Cliffs of Moher.
Most students bought themselves an Aran sweater which is a classical fisherman's sweater with beautiful stitch patterns that have a traditional interpretation. For example, the prominent cable patterns on the chest is said to be a wish for safety and good luck. Once again, we had a beautiful sunny day!! The students were amazed by the simplicity of the uncomplicated life of the islanders, many who still speak Gaelic.
